Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), expressed concern that petrol prices in Pakistan could have soared to PKR 1,000 per liter if the PDM government hadn’t taken necessary steps, as reported by ARY News on September 18, 2023.
During a virtual address to party members in Lahore, Nawaz Sharif criticized past administrations, blaming them for the economic crisis the country faced. He accused them of making decisions based on political motives, pushing Pakistan to the brink of an economic collapse.
Nawaz Sharif emphasized that the PML-N took significant risks in its political endeavors to prevent the country from falling into financial default. He also mentioned how India had imitated Pakistan’s economic strategies and succeeded, while Pakistani prime ministers had to seek financial aid from other nations.
In related news, the government recently raised petrol and diesel prices substantially, despite earlier promises to provide relief to the masses. Petrol prices surged by PKR 26.2 per liter, reaching PKR 331.38 per liter. Within a month, the caretaker government further increased petrol prices by PKR 58 per liter and diesel by PKR 56 per liter.
Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also confirmed Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan on October 21, expressing that he would be warmly welcomed. Shehbaz Sharif stated that Nawaz Sharif was unjustly removed from power through a conspiracy, and the rigging in the 2018 general elections put Pakistan behind in the region.
Shehbaz Sharif added that consultations within the party led to the decision that Nawaz Sharif would return to Pakistan in October to lead the election campaign. He affirmed that Nawaz Sharif would face the law upon his return, leaving no room for doubt about this decision.
