  • Google’s Pixel team is working on an Android tablet for 2023

Google is back in the game of tablets and we expect Google to bring the iPad competitor it always needed.

Rick Osterloh, the company’s senior vice president of devices and services, made the announcement at its I/O developer conference that the company aims to launch an Android-powered tablet in 2023. Osterloh didn’t go into much detail about the device, other than to state that it will be powered by the same Tensor processor found in Google’s latest Pixel phones, and that it is aimed at consumers rather than professionals.

Osterloh described the upcoming Pixel Tablet as a “premium-style” product with a larger screen size. The price can be expected to be closer to an iPad as compared to the already existing budgeted Android tablets.

The Nexus 7 was Google’s last first-party Android tablet. Why switch back to Android tablets now? It was said by Osterloh that there was a definite demand for this product category and that the Android team had been making significant work in converting the system to a tablet form-factor.

For Osterloh, the device is part of a goal to offer a wide range of first-party products. According to him, “We believe that it is crucial for our users’ ecosystem.” A larger Pixel device has been a clear request from them.”
