Scaling New Summits: Naila Kiani’s Courageous Climb to Challenge Stereotypes

Pakistani mountaineer Naila Kiani has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Pakistani woman to successfully summit Nanga Parbat. On Sunday, Naila Kiani joined a group of around 40 climbers, comprising both local and foreign adventurers, in their quest to conquer the challenging and perilous Nanga Parbat, famously known as the ‘Killer Mountain’ due to its high fatality rate and treacherous conditions.
Accompanying her were fellow Pakistani climbers Wajidullah Nagar and Samina Baig, who also showcased their remarkable abilities and perseverance during the journey. Their contributions added to the collective achievements of the group.
Confirming this remarkable feat, Karrar Haidri, the Secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, announced Naila Kiani’s successful summit of Nanga Parbat on July 2, 2023, at 10:18 am. This achievement marks a significant milestone as Naila Kiani becomes the first Pakistani woman to conquer the formidable peak.

  • Naila Kiani, a Pakistani mountaineer, has achieved a series of groundbreaking accomplishments in the world of mountaineering. In July 2021, she became the first Pakistani woman to successfully climb Gasherbrum II, an 8,035-meter peak and the 13th highest mountain globally. This achievement marked her as the first Pakistani female to summit any of the five Pakistani peaks above 8000 meters.
  • In July 2022, Kiani accomplished another extraordinary feat by becoming one of only two Pakistani women, alongside Samina Baig, to conquer K2. Standing at 8,611 meters, K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world. Naila successfully scaled this formidable peak on her first attempt.
  • Adding to her list of achievements, in August 2022, Kiani became the first Pakistani female to summit Gasherbrum I, an 8,080-meter peak and the 11th-highest mountain globally. Notably, she accomplished this feat immediately after conquering K2, making her the first Pakistani woman to climb Gasherbrum I straight after climbing K2.
  • Continuing her remarkable journey, in April 2023, Naila Kiani became the first Pakistani woman to reach the summit of Annapurna, an 8,091-meter peak and the 10th highest mountain in the world, located in Nepal.
  • In May 2023, Kiani added another significant achievement to her list by becoming the second Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,848 meters. Additionally, she held the distinction of being the first international climber to reach the summit of Everest in 2023.
