Which parenting approach do you lean toward—traditional or modern?

Parenting is a term that carries its own weight. If we’re honest, it’s more than just complex-it’s a daily battle of love, discipline, and understanding. The distinction between traditional and modern parenting becomes clearer in this context. The modern era brings its own set of challenges, from navigating societal norms to managing the ever-present distractions of technology. As the saying goes, “It’s not only children who grow. Parents do, too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours”.

As of now, in 2024, parents usually follow the modern approach as it involves every style of compassion, love, and compromise. This approach acknowledges the child’s own unique life experiences, which he/she can freely share with their parents. It helps in creating an effective atmosphere in which they feel comfortable while expressing their emotions and intelligence.

By discussing proper boundaries with your children, you can set positive discipline techniques. Rather than bribing your child with something like,” If you do your homework, I will give you a gift,” try saying, “If you do your homework, you can achieve big in your class, and the teacher will include you in a good student’s list.” In this way, they will develop self-motivation, which is necessary in making them humble and kind.

Balance their screen time effectively; well, this is the major issue parents are facing right now. Mostly, parents put their children in front TV when they cry a little bit. Try to cope with this with any physical activity, like taking them to parks or teaching them cricket or any other sport that your child is interested in. Hiding them from technology is not possible. You can try managing special hours for screen time, which can help them indulge more in physical activities and less in screen time.

Also, instead of strictly enforcing rules, as in the traditional approach, open communication and mutual respect should take center stage. Understand their unique needs and give them space to decide about their choices. The modern approach is less about asserting authority and more about guiding them to become confident and self-aware.

These are just a few modern parenting strategies that we’ve observed. But we know that parenting is a journey, and there’s always more to learn. If you have your tips or insights to add, we’d love to hear from you in the comments.
