The popular ride-hailing app, Bykea has been hacked once again. Users are receiving weird notifications with abusive content.

The popular app is used for short rides and delivery service and is an economical means of transportation. With over 5 million downloads on the play store, the hacking is a serious threat to the IT infrastructure of the country and the already struggling economy.

Response by Bykea Management

Commenting on the incident, Bykea has apologized to the users for the inconvenience and has made it clear that a 3rd party was behind the whole act.

The app is now safe to use, and any issues can be reported to the Bykea helpline, 021-38654444.

200GB BYKEA Database Exposed in 2021

According to Safety Detectives (a group of ethical hackers), BYKEA’s 200GB database was exposed in 2021, with more than 400 million records, with server information and the personal data of the company’s customers and drivers.

The data contained full names, email addresses, phone numbers, CNIC, etc.

In 2020 and 2021, concerns were raised regarding the weak security system of Bykea. Safety Detectives reported vulnerabilities in one of Bykea’s backup logging nodes in 2020, indicating a history of mistakes on the company’s end.

Pakistan and Recent Security Incidents

Recently the website of a popular university, IST (Institute of Space Technology), was hacked. The hackers demanded ransom in exchange for the data and threatened to release private information otherwise.
