The CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday announced the rebranding of Facebook as Meta. The app however will retain its name and will still be referred to as Facebook. The CEO of the company made an effort to change its corporate name from a battered social network to a name inspired by tech, i.e. Meta. It is focused on building the next generation of online interaction known as the “Metaverse”.
The Metaverse, the next evolution of social connection globally, refers to the immersive virtual spaces where people can connect, play games, attend concerts, meet colleagues, and buy digital goods and services. This collective project will be open to everyone to connect, to be able to socialize, collaborate, learn, and go beyond what is achievable today. Meta is helping people to create ways and build a future where they have more ways to connect and play in 3D. The names of all the apps working under Meta like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp will remain the same.
In the Facebook Connect virtual reality conference, Mark Zuckerberg affirmed that the company is focused on improving its identity to reflect the broader and most innovative ambitions. With over three billion people connected around the world on this platform globally, the Facebook app will retain its name. He stated that:
“It is time for us to adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do,” he said. “From now on, we’re going to be metaverse first, not Facebook first.”
He further assured that the privacy standards will be taken care of into the metaverse from the very first day. This change would be a key to the company’s existence and will bring a large influx of youngsters to the platform.
