According to the latest shipping data, there’s been a significant increase in Pakistan’s exports of Rice to China. Given this, it is also anticipated that Pakistan would surpass India as China’s leading rice exporter in the upcoming years.

As per the official data from the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, Pakistan’s exports of rice to China totaled $277.56 million, an increase of 9.73 percent over the prior year.

In this regard, Badar uz Zaman,  Commercial Counselor of the Pakistani Embassy in China, mentioned that Pakistan continued to be one of China’s largest suppliers of broken rice.

He said that “Last year, China imported 973,000 tons of rice worth $437 million from Pakistan. Seven new Pakistan rice exporters have been added to the approved list, which has risen to 53 in 2021.

Meanwhile, Babar also advised Pakistan to continue working on its premium types of Basmati and other grains because they do not yet have a significant market share in China.

The main varieties of rice exported to China at the moment include only broken rice, particularly IRRI-9, IRRI-6, and semi- or fully milled rice, Babar mentioned.

Pakistan is leveraging traditional and, in particular, social media platforms to raise awareness of Pakistani rice in the Chinese market, he added.

The counselor also believes that Pakistan would overtake India as China’s top rice exporter in the next few years, boosting and strengthening cooperation between the two countries’ agricultural sectors.
